JPG vs PNG: which one do you need?

The two formats solve different problems. JPG compresses photos into small files; PNG keeps every pixel exact and supports transparency.

JPGPNG
Best for Photos, screenshots for sharing Logos, graphics, screenshots for editing
Compression Lossy (small files) Lossless (larger files)
Transparency Not supported Supported
Typical size Smaller (often 5–10×) Larger

Two things worth knowing

Transparency becomes white in JPG

JPG has no alpha channel, so when you convert a transparent PNG to JPG, this tool fills the transparent areas with white. If you need the transparency preserved, keep the file as PNG.

Quality only applies to JPG

PNG is lossless, so there is no quality slider for it. For JPG, 90 is a safe default: visually identical to the original for most photos while cutting the file size substantially.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert PNG to JPG for free?

Use the converter at the top of this page: drop your PNG files in, select JPG, and download the results. It's free, runs in your browser, and works with many files at once.

Does converting PNG to JPG lose quality?

JPG uses lossy compression, so there is some quality loss, but at quality 90 it is rarely visible in photos. Graphics with sharp edges and text keep better fidelity as PNG.

What happens to transparency when converting to JPG?

JPG doesn't support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a white background during conversion. Convert to PNG instead if you need transparency.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens entirely in your browser using the canvas API. Your images never leave your device, which also means there are no file-size limits and it works offline once the page is loaded.

Can I convert WebP, GIF, or BMP files too?

Yes. Any image format your browser can display (including WebP, GIF, BMP, and AVIF in modern browsers) can be converted to JPG or PNG.

Is there a mobile app version?

Yes. The JPG/PNG Converter app for iPhone and Android converts photo batches straight from your photo library, with the same on-device privacy.
