How to calculate a discount
- 1.
Divide the discount percent by 100 (25% → 0.25).
- 2.
Multiply the original price by that number to get the amount saved.
- 3.
Subtract it from the original price to get the sale price.
sale price = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100) Example: 25% off $80 → 80 × (1 − 0.25) = $60. You save $20.

Stacked discounts don't simply add up
An extra 10% coupon on top of a 20% sale is not 30% off. The coupon applies to the already-discounted price: a $100 item drops to $80 after the sale, then to $72 with the coupon, a 28% effective discount. Use the “extra discount” field above to get the honest number when offers stack.
What about sales tax?
In the US, shelf prices usually exclude sales tax, which is added at checkout. Enter your local rate (for example 8.875% in New York City) in the tax field to see the amount you'll actually pay. In most other countries, displayed prices already include VAT, so leave the field at 0 unless you're computing pre-tax prices.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 20% off a price?
Multiply the price by 0.8 (which is 1 − 20 ÷ 100). For example, 20% off $45 is 45 × 0.8 = $36. Or just type the price above and tap 20%.
How much is 30% off $150?
$105. The discount saves you 150 × 0.30 = $45, leaving 150 − 45 = $105.
How do stacked or double discounts work?
The second discount applies to the price after the first one. 20% then 10% means the price is multiplied by 0.8 and then 0.9, which is a combined 28% off, not 30%.
How do I find the original price from a sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). If something costs $60 after a 25% discount, the original price was 60 ÷ 0.75 = $80.
